Treasures
Our class got together with the learners from Mrs. Peckmann's class & Mrs. Weikert's class. Together, we gained understanding of what life was like for the Pilgrims and the Native AmerIcans back in the 1600's. We learned about the "treasures" given to the Pilgrims that helped them to survive in the new land.
We also read The Treasure. We discussed the story and made connections to what we learned about the Pilgrims and Native Americans.

Our Treasures
We thought about the treasures we possess...our talents, our passions, things that make us feel good. We did this using the Chalk Talk Protocol.

Examples Of How People Have Used Their Treasures To Help Others
We read Planting The Trees of Kenya and learned how Wangari used her treasures to make the world a better place!
Here's what we learned!
We watched a TED talk given by Maya Penn. We learned how her treasures are making the world a better place!

Quotes
Analyzing quotes that people have used in regards to using "treasures."
Read and reflect using the 4 A's Protocol:
What ASSUMPTIONS does the author/s have?
What do you AGREE with?
What do you want to ARGUE with in the text?
What part of the text do you want to ASPIRE to?
After the protocol, respond to this blog post.

Ode To Can
What can we do? No limits...what can we do?
What Can We Do?
Click here for some ideas to further your thinking. Continue to brainstorm together...think CAN!
What Can We Do?
What can we do? We brainstormed ways to use our treasures to help others. At first, it was difficult to think of ways in which we can use our treasures to create treasures for others. However, after we shared, talked about the Ode To Can video and saw some examples, our creative juices started to flow!
We looked at all of our ideas. We noticed some common themes and compiled a list of ideas that were most important to us. Take a look at what we came up with!
Choosing Our Path
We completed a form choosing the project that sounded best for us, so that we can begin work on creating treasures for others.
Getting Organized
Having ideas is great. Having a desire to do good things is also great. However, to be most effective, we need to think through the project.
Step 1: Initial Planning
We began by brainstorming the who, what, where, when, why, & how of our project ideas.
Step 2: Getting Feedback & Reflecting
We invited volunteer experts and family members into the classroom. First, they listened to our ideas.

After we shared our ideas, we all participated in a protocol, The Feedback Carousel, to receive feedback.
Four types of feedback given during The Feedback Carousel protocol:
- Clarifying Questions
- Probing Questions
- Recommendations
- Resources
We spent 10 minutes looking at the different projects and adding sticky notes to charts with feedback.
Before wrapping things up, grown ups went to each project and talked to us about the feedback helping us to clarify and understand the ideas so that we could move forward.

Creating Our Plans
Step 1: We took the information from The Feedback Carousel and reflected upon it. We thought about the feedback we received in the form of sticky notes and the discussion we had afterwards with grown ups.
We wrote a personal reflection to share our understanding before we brought our understanding to our group.
Killian's Reflection
Julia's Reflection
Imani's Reflection
Kevin's Reflection
Step 2: We began planning collaboratively using a Google Document. We are envisioning how to make our ideas turn into realities!

Pitching Our Proposals To Mr. Miller
We had Mrs. Bowman come into our classroom to talk to us about pitching proposals. This is something that she does with her job and something that we need to do in order to get the go-ahead to move forward with our projects.
We took notes using Twitter while she was here.

We know that in order to effectively pitch a proposal, we need to know our audience. We took a school "field trip" and then brainstormed things that Mr. Miller valued.

Skype An Expert
The informational comics group talked to cartoonist, author, and illustrator, Mike Artell. He answered questions the boys had about creating comics!
Mike Artell got our thank-you note. Look what he sent to us!
Ms. Kay From The SPCA Visits
Ms. Kay, an SPCA volunteer, came to talk to us about what the SPCA does. She explained how to care for animals and how to be safe around them.
Sandwiches For The Hungry
On March 17th, Rubi, AJ, Ella S, and Imani made 250 sandwiches to distribute to the Panther Pantry. They solicited donations of almost 20 pounds each of ham and turkey, 30 pounds of cheese, multiple loaves of bread, peanut butter, jelly, Nutella, baggies, bags, napkins, and single serving treats.
They created assembly lines and managed their class and four first grade volunteers to make the sandwiches in just one hour. What an accomplishment!
What's next? Lots and lots of thank you notes!
